What each record type does

DNS is the switchboard behind a domain. Each record type answers a different question about where things go.

    A / AAAA

    Point a name at a server's IPv4 or IPv6 address. When a site is down or on the wrong host, this is the first place to look.

    CNAME

    An alias – one name deferring to another. Common for www hosts and provider-managed services.

    MX

    Where the domain's email is delivered, in priority order. No MX, no incoming mail.

    TXT

    Free-form entries that carry the domain's paperwork: SPF policies, DKIM keys, site-verification tokens.

    NS

    The name servers that answer for the domain. These decide where every other record is actually managed.

    SOA / CAA

    Zone bookkeeping and certificate rules: who administers the zone, and which authorities may issue SSL for it.

What do the DNS record types mean?
A and AAAA records point a name at a server's IPv4 or IPv6 address – that's where the website lives. MX records route the domain's email, TXT records carry verification and anti-spoofing entries like SPF, and NS records name the servers that answer for the domain in the first place.
I changed my DNS – why do I still see the old records?
Every record carries a TTL, the number of seconds resolvers may cache it. Until that timer runs out, parts of the internet keep serving the old answer. The TTLs shown next to each record here tell you the maximum wait.
Why does my domain's mail setup live in TXT records?
SPF policies, DKIM keys, and DMARC rules are all published as TXT records – that's how receiving mail servers find them. If email deliverability is what you're actually chasing, our email deliverability check reads and grades those records for you.
Where does this data come from?
Live DNS resolution – the same answers mail servers and browsers get, cached for a minute at most. Nothing is simulated.
